Zoo keepers and veterinarians from 8 zoological facilities attended an African elephant workshop this April, co-hosted by SEZARC and the Birmingham Zoo. Attendees observed and practiced elephant care-taking skills and training protocols; learned about elephant reproduction, logistics for coordination of elephant artificial insemination procedures, and current behavioral and endocrine research at the Birmingham Zoo; and participated in semen collections and assessments. A representative from Asian Elephant Support also shared information on that organization’s important work. The workshop was a great success and an important opportunity for the exchange of knowledge and experiences among elephant professionals!
